Welcome To mia montessori academy
AMI RECOGNIzed school
Established in 2004, we offer Primary & Elementary Programs that follow the AMI (Association Montessori International) Montessori philosophy.
A recognized school by Canada’s Montessori Quality Assurance (MQA) program.
Mia Montessori is one of only two AMI recognized schools in British Columbia, and the only one in Richmond.
Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) was founded in 1929 by Dr. Maria Montessori, along with her son Mario, to maintain and promote her method of teaching (pedagogy) and make it available to children worldwide. Now based in Amsterdam, Netherlands, AMI continues to promote Dr. Maria Montessori’s work around the world.
AMI is distinguished for training teachers to become experts at following the Montessori principles and nurturing children towards holistic development. In Canada, AMI is governed by Association Montessori Internationale (Canada).
My education.
Thought differently.
We are committed to an educational environment that follows a true and fully certified montessori approach, which is designed to ensure the student is the owner of their education.
our name, consistent with our vision, uses italian as an homage to Maria Montessori’s roots. ‘mia’ means ‘my’ in Italian.
What does the montessori approach and our school instil in each student?
A sense of ownership over learning,
a sense that it is “Mia Education”.
Maria Montessori
Dr. Maria Montessori, Italy’s first female doctor, used her medical qualifications to understand and educate children. She had a particular genius for observing children as they really are, rather than as adults wish them to be. As a result, the Montessori philosophy encompasses the environment that will maximise learning dependent on the child’s stage of development.
The Montessori Philosophy
Montessori believed that no human being can be entirely educated by another person. They must also aim to do it themselves or it will never truly be done. A truly educated individual therefore continues learning long after the hours and years in the classroom environment because they are motivated within by a natural curiosity and love for knowledge. This is the fundamental difference between Montessori and other education systems. Rather than education being something that is done to them, the child must see it as ‘Mia education’… “my education, my journey, my future”.
Mia Montessori Academy’s Accessibility Plan
Mia Montessori’s Commitment to Inclusion…
Our Accessibility Plan outlines our commitment to being an inclusive school and includes our Three-Year Strategic Plan. We welcome your feedback on Accessibility Supports and Barriers as we navigate this journey of creating an inclusive school that meets the needs of all children and families in our community.
mixed-age primary and elementary programs
In line with the AMI Montessori philosophy, our Primary program is for children aged 2.5 to 6 years old. Younger children have the option of attending either a Morning or Afternoon program. Older children have the option of the Extended Day or Kindergarten program.
Our Elementary program is for children aged 6 to 12 years old.
It’s no secret that children thrive in a Montessori environment. Montessori classrooms are fundamentally different from traditional ones. They are so unique in fact that it is hard to identify the differences that contribute to enabling children to thrive. We could write an entire book on this, but for now here are 5 key factors that contribute to your child’s success.
